๐Ÿพ Best Food for Japanese Chin Dogs

The Japanese Chin is a small, elegant companion breed that needs the right nutrition to stay healthy and happy. Because of their small size and sensitive digestion, choosing the right food is very important.

✅ What to Look For in Food

  • Small Breed Formula – Smaller kibble size & higher calories per bite

  • High-Quality Protein – Real meat (chicken, lamb, salmon) as the first ingredient

  • Balanced Nutrition – Healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals for skin, coat, and energy

  • Easy to Digest – Limited fillers, avoid artificial additives

๐Ÿฅฉ Recommended Foods

  • Royal Canin Small Breed Adult

  • Hill’s Science Diet Small Paws

  • Blue Buffalo Life Protection Small Breed

  • Wellness CORE Grain-Free Small Breed

  • Merrick Lil’ Plates Small Breed

  • Natural Balance L.I.D. Small Breed (for sensitive stomachs)

๐Ÿฒ Wet Food & Toppers (for Picky Eaters)

  • Nutro Ultra Small Breed Wet Food

  • Weruva or Tiki Dog Wet Foods

  • Bone broth toppers for extra flavor and hydration

⚠️ Foods to Avoid

  • Cheap foods with corn, soy, or by-products

  • Excessive treats (causes weight gain)

  • Toxic foods: onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate

๐Ÿ’ก Quick Tip

Feed your Japanese Chin 2–3 small meals per day instead of one large meal. This helps digestion and keeps their energy steady.

Midnight

Midnight’s Story ๐Ÿพ
We found Midnight—along with a few other kittens—in the garage one day. They were lying in motor oil, completely covered and in rough shape. My daughter-in-law gently brought them inside and cleaned them up with lots of care. One of them was named Dusty at first (though I’ll have to double-check!), and while they kept him for a little while, they eventually decided to give him to me.

He was a handful at first—but he quickly won my heart. I renamed him Midnight, and he became my shadow. I loved him deeply. For a while, we actually thought Midnight was a girl! He even wore pink... until we found out he was a boy ๐Ÿ˜„. He was neutered a few months later, and the pink wardrobe was officially retired.

At the vet, they estimated him to be quite old already, but we had a good idea of his age from when we found him. We believe he was born around June 29, 2016, so he just turned 9 years old this summer. Time has flown, but Midnight will always be my oily little garage kitten turned beloved companion.

Midnight

This is Midnight. We thought he was a girl, but when looking again, Nope, she was a Boy! He loved lying in this bucket, so I put a little blanket in there for him.

Dog Hairball Prevention & Care Guide

Can Dogs Get Hairballs?
Yes ̶ but it’s rare compared to cats. Dogs don’t groom themselves as
much, but long-haired breeds or dogs that lick/chew excessively can swallow
enough hair to cause issues.

Prevention Tips
• Brush your dog’s coat several times a week (daily for long-haired breeds).
• Feed a balanced, fiber-rich diet to keep digestion moving smoothly. Fresh
water at all times helps prevent constipation.
• Check for allergies, fleas, or skin irritation that may cause constant licking.
Ask your vet about solutions if licking is due to anxiety.
• Professional grooming during heavy shedding seasons can prevent hair
buildup.

 Watch for Warning Signs
• Frequent gagging, coughing, or retching
• Vomiting hair, foam, or bile
• Loss of appetite or constipation
• Lethargy or signs of abdominal discomfort

Quick Tip
Most swallowed hair passes normally. A small “hairball” may come up with
vomit occasionally, but frequent problems could signal an underlying issue.
